Selling Your First Pots Online: Photos, Pricing and Getting Paid
At some point friends say you should sell your work. Selling a few pieces online is manageable if you plan the boring parts as carefully as the pots.
Photograph honestly
- Use soft daylight and a plain background.
- Show the base, the inside and something for scale.
- Photograph flaws. Handmade work has them, and buyers appreciate honesty.
Price for the whole process
Include clay, glaze, firing costs, packaging, platform fees and your time. Underpricing is common among beginners and hard to correct later.
Packaging
Pottery breaks in the post. Wrap each piece individually, use a box inside a box with padding between, and test by shaking the parcel gently. If anything moves, add more padding.
How payment reaches you
Marketplaces and payment platforms hold the buyer's money first and release it to you later, usually after identity checks, a minimum balance and a processing window. Read the payout rules before you list anything, so you are not surprised. Pages that set out the whole sequence plainly are the most useful. A clear example from the gaming sector, in Traditional Chinese, is a step-by-step summary of the withdrawal process for one brand, including the threshold that must be met first (必贏娛樂城提領步驟整理). Whatever platform you sell through, look for the same things: the steps, the minimum, the timing and what could hold a payment up.
Keep records
Note every sale and every cost. Rules on declaring income from hobby sales differ by country; check what applies to you.
